Molekulární selekční markery mohou zásadním způsobem ovlivnit rychlost a úspěšnost šlechtitelského procesu a získání nových odrůd. Předpokladem pro úspěšný vývoj markeru je dostupnost kontrastních rodičovských linií a segregujících generacích pro sledovaný znak. Vývoj markeru pak spočívá v izolaci DNA, PCR analýze a identifikaci diskriminantních markerů, odvození specifických primerů a ověření stability a síly markeru na segregujících populacích.
